Be Global: Expand Your Knowledge

Are you thinking about starting a business? Want to move to a better part of town? Tired of listening to supervisors who don’t care? Are you frustrated with your life and want to make a drastic change? Regardless of your reasons, you have the power to change your current situation. Always be aware that the only thing holding you back from success is you! Want to make a step in the right direction? Expand your knowledge. If you want to make a difference in this world, not matter how small or large, you will first need to know what you’re getting yourself into. You may not want to save the world, but you might want to start a clothing drive for the victims of the earthquakes in Haiti or start a memorial fund for the families of those killed during the war. No matter what you chose to do to help the global community, you will have to take advice, criticism, and information from others with more experience/expertise for you. So while you’re online reading the hottest online magazine (B.Postive, of course) or tweeting about how boring work is, take some time to educate yourself on whatever it is you need to do in order to uplift, change, or motivate yourself. The city of Birmingham is filled with plenty of FREE opportunities to increase your knowledge of politics, business, personal growth, etc. You can find some of them on the Active Culture website:  http://www.activeculture.info. On this site you’ll find everything from lectures to local fund raising events in Birmingham and the surrounding areas. If you are looking for some internships/job opportunities/ fundraiser ideas, the following sites should help get you started and they also all have local offices for your added convenience:

Remember that you hold the key to your future and you can create the change you desire.

Whats your FICO?

As a banker for one of the largest financial institutions in America, I know first hand the importance of having good credit.  Often times, people aren’t as educated on the ins and out of credit as we should be. We all know about the FICO (Fair Isaac Corporation) score, but what exactly is it and how does it directly affect us as a people. The FICO score is a huge factor in your credit.  This score can be obtained from the following three credit reporting agencies:

-Equifax: www.eqifax.com or 1-800-658-1111

-Experian: www.experian.com or 1-888-397-3742

-TransUnion: www.transunion.com or 1-800-916-8800

All citizens of the United States are entitled to one free report from each of these agencies a year. Your FICO score and credit can be detrimental to your way of life. Many employers use these scores as a way of screening applicants. In addition to employers leasing agents, car dealerships, furniture stores, and banks use these scores and credit history to determine eligibility for products. Often times young people use credit as a way to live outside of our means then when we really need it, we can not get approved for anything. So young people use your credit wisely because it definitely does follow you.

Breast Cancer

B. Positive Magazine supports “Breast Cancer Awareness” during the month of October, so in light of this month I have decided to write an article for the many women who are currently fighting the uphill battle living with breast cancer, and those who have passed due to this unforgiving disease.

Breast cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in women. Over 200,000 patients this year alone have sat in a doctor’s office only to be told they were diagnosed with breast cancer. Of those two-hundred thousand women, at least 40,000 women die from complications related to breast cancer (most commonly from malignant cancerous cells that eventually spread to distant areas within the body). The trending research and prevention of this disease is near and dear to my heart being that I have lost two relatives due to the unforgivable manifestation of symptoms  my relatives and many other patients endured when presented with this disease. Having seen the detrimental factors imposed on my relatives such as being physically weak, being confined to a bed, suffering agonizing pain from chemotherapy that is often paired with radiation, and the nausea associated with the therapy methods, as well as many other side effects; I decided that I no longer wanted to fall witness to the affects of what breast cancer can do to my dearly loved relatives or my family in its entirety.

One might ask, “What can I do to prevent breast cancer from imposing on my family?” Truthfully there is no single way to prevent breast cancer and the chances of this disease occurring within your family depends on the genetics of your family. For those patients who have a predisposition related to this disease but was not acquired through genetics, accurate prevention may be difficult to prognosis.  Many Oncologists/Hematologist and research scientists have yet to discover the underlying cause for why the disease occurs. However, simple methods to help lower your risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer are simple: maintain a healthy diet, keep tract of your physician appointments and preemptive screening. Almost two-thirds of aggressive breast cancer diagnoses are found in women age 55 and older and one-eighth of obstruction in breast cancers are found in women under age 45.  It is important for women who are in this age bracket to have an annual screening called a mammogram. Be sure to ask your doctor to show you the proper technique for self-examination so that you can catch those suspicious lumps and recognize the early signs and symptoms of this disease.
