The 3rd Annual Kick'N Chick'N Birmingham Wing Fest to Benefit Magic Moments
October 1, 2011 marked the 3rd Annual Kick’N Chick’N Birmingham Wing Fest, to benefit Birmingham’s Magic Moments. The Kick’N Chick’N Birmingham Wing Fest is a chicken wing cook-off between local Birmingham restaurants competing for the title of best wings in town, or what they deem as The Thighsman Trophy. Thousands of locals come out to taste the fabulous wings and celebrate the South’s favorite fall tradition, football.
In true tailgate fashion, large flat-screen televisions covered the streets of The Kick’N Chick’N Birmingham Wing Fest for continuous coverage of SEC football. Don’t fret, if you prefer to sit and eat there were also tailgating tents with tables, chairs, and even larger tvs for your convenience. Located in the SOHO district of Homewood, AL The Kick’N Chick’N Birmingham Wing Fest can definitely be called the ultimate tailgate party.
Wheter you like your wings grilled, fried, baked, or a combination of the three, The Kick’N Chick’N Birmingham Wing Fest was sure to have food to suit your preference. If you live in the south you know football, chicken wings, and ice-cold beer go hand in hand. Which is why at the The Kick’N Chick’N Birmingham Wing Fest the proceeds for every beer purchase went to Magic Moments.
This year was the premiere of the The Kick’N Chick’N Wing Eating competition. Eric Fillebaum took home the crown eating a total of 1lb 2.4 ounces of wings. This year’s 2011 Kick’n Chick’n Birmingham Wing Fest THIGHSMAN Trophy winner was Baumhowers Restaurant scoring the highest overall when combining the best buffalo style hot wing and best alternative wing categories. Other winners include Shindigs Catering, 2011 Best Finger Lick’n Chick’n People’s Choice Award, Shane’s Rib Shack Valleydale, Shake Your Tailfeather Award winner, and Billy’s Bar & Grill, Hotter N’ Hot Award.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the wing festival and I will definitely return next year. This year’s competitors literally turned up the heat in the kitchen, which is why patrons such as Margaret Benson used the word “Spicy” to describe her experience at The Kick’N Chick’N Birmingham Wing Fest. If you’re a Buffalo Wing fan I suggest you purchase to next’s years Wing Fest, you certainly won’t sorry.
