CHARLOTTE, N.C., APRIL 4, 2012 – Charlotte-based Belk, Inc., the nation’s largest privately owned mainline department store company, is seeking Southern designers of apparel, shoes and women’s accessories to add to its numerous collection of brands for its Southern Designer Showcase. Winning designs will be featured in Belk’s 125th anniversary advertising campaign and sold at Belk and on Belk.com in spring 2013.

“We are proud of our history as a Southern-based retailer and want to introduce even more great brands to our assortment,” said Arlene Goldstein, Belk’s Vice President of Trend Merchandising and Fashion Direction. “We are looking for brands that represent the talented South and the modern, Southern style we deliver every day.”

Categories include women’s, men’s and kids’ apparel, shoes, and women’s accessories. Designers must live in Belk’s footprint of Southern states or have a strong connection to the region.

Designers, who must be 18 or older, will be asked to include photographs of up to 10 samples in their entries, along with a resume, bio, and write-up about why their looks are in keeping with Belk’s brand of Modern. Southern. Style. No fashion illustrations will be accepted.

Entry forms and directions for submission are available at www.belk.com/southerndesigner and are due to Belk by May 1, 2012. Finalists will be chosen by Belk’s panel of judges and notified by email June 1, 2012, that they are invited to Charlotte to present to Belk’s panel of judges on July 20, 2012.

Showcase winners will be notified the week of Aug. 6, 2012, and will have the opportunity to become a Belk vendor partner featured in Belk stores and on Belk.com March – May 2013. In addition to being featured in Belk’s 125th Anniversary Celebration advertising campaign, all winning designs will be showcased on Belk’s Facebook page and a favorite will be voted on by Belk’s 300,000+ Facebook fans.

“Belk’s mission is to satisfy the modern Southern lifestyle like no one else, so that our customers get the fashion they desire and the value they deserve,” Goldstein said. “We are very excited to see and hear from Southern designers we may not know about so we can add them to our many wonderful brands in our 125th anniversary year.”
