Be [Opinionated] Our Children, Our Future: What's Going On?

“I believe that children are our future, Teach them well and let them lead the way” -Whitney Houston, Greatest Love Of All

Recently, many media outlets have started to focus their attention on the growing gaps and problems in the American School System. From charter schools and private academies, to online courses and homeschooling, our children have a so many ways to gain an education; yet to some, it seems they are still being robbed of the knowledge they really need. Over the past decade, films like Waiting for Superman and government rulings, like the infamous, No Child Left Behind Act passed by President G. W. Bush in 2001, have put the spotlight on the lack of equality in our nation’s schools. Concerned parents feel that this is unacceptable. How can one of the most powerful countries in the WORLD lack in education? How can we as a nation pass along our war strategies with other nations but forgo passing on our rich histories and new technologies to our future generations? It seems that we have almost placed our children on auto-pilot when it comes to education. The days of the parent-teacher conference are almost extinct, along with the PTA, and community assemblies. Our children are already raising themselves at home, due to the burden of the economy on their parents, but should the burden be placed on them to teach themselves too?

My nephew is nine years old and when he brought home a less than perfect report card last year, I asked him why he felt he didn’t make the honor roll. He told me he tried and the teacher failed him anyway. I then asked him was he having any problems understanding in class. He informed me that he has problems reading and comprehending and he told his teacher about these problems and he received no extra attention. So who’s to blame? Can I really be upset with the teacher whose classroom is overflowing with students. Or maybe my sister’s to blame, the single mother of four, who’s working and just recently finished school herself. Is it the infamous “system”? Or maybe it’s my nephew’s fault for not learning quick enough. I cannot point the finger at any one person and feel completely satisfied with my answer. Truth is, I feel to blame in some strange way. I feel that we are all to blame. Our education system is failing our children and many of us do not care or do not show enough concern. I personally have not shown an interest in volunteering in our schools since 2008 and thinking back, I really miss tutoring kids and making a difference. It’s hard to balance work, home, and everything else that life throws at us but should we use that as an excuse to “leave our children behind”? Over the past few months or so, I’ve attended several lectures, visited different websites, and participated in several small group discussions and I’ve drawn only one conclusion: Something has to be done or the future will be very, very bleak and that’s not going to work for me.

I want to know YOUR opinion about the American Education System and the pros and cons of alternative education methods (charter schools, homeschooling, etc.) Below I’ve listed a few websites that are focused on the improvement of our education system.

My hope is that you will visit these sites, along with others, and form your own opinion on the future of our children. Do you agree that the education system is failing our kids? Do you believe that there is nothing wrong with the education system? Do you have ideas or suggestions on how we can “fix” or improve our educational system. Well I want to know! As the Community editor for B. Positive, I want to know how you really feel about your child’s, and in a way, your own future.  I will gather all of the best comments and use them in a future article.

The Experience at Merienda

Contemplating what to do on a Friday night, my friend and I decided to check out the new club Merienda located in Birmingham, Alabama on Richard Arrington Blvd. When I walked into this venue I observed that it was different than any other club I’ve seen. Merienda was a laid back, relaxing, and had a very intimate setting. I was captivated by the ambiance which consisted of dimmed lights and candles. The mood was most definitely set for a mature audience. The drinks were well prepared, and the food was great. Entertainment for the night consisted of the band YVPG, who performed a mixture of r&b, jazz, and neo-soul. Overall my experience at Merienda was great. If you want to go out for drinks, relax, and to mix and mingle all while being entertained you should definitely check out Merienda on Monday’s for “Monday Night Football” and Thursday-Friday, for “Happy Hour” from five to nine. If your a night owl check out Merienda for Birmingham’s elite after hours events!

I give this club 5 stars*****

Are HIV infected women selfish for wanting to live normal lives?

Recently I watched an episode of Oprah that exposed the secret lives of down-low men. Let me take the time to clarify for you all what the term “down-low man” is considered to be. A “down-low man” is a male that assumes the role of a heterosexual lifestyle in the public’s eye but behind closed doors they secretly have sexual encounters with homosexual men. Now that we’ve gotten all the technical  jargon out the way, Oprah had several guest on her show who had encountered the down-low lifestyle whether it be direct or indirectly. One guest in particular stood out to me for several reasons.

Bridget B, a 32 year former business woman, had been infected with HIV by her ex-husband Jon B, a Hollywood executive. Jon B, as he is known in court documents, lived this secret lifestyle unbeknown to his wife. The two dated for two years before getting married and shortly once they returned from their honeymoon John began to fall ill with a temperature of 103 degrees. About a month after John had such rising temperatures Bridget then became sick. Bridget went to the doctor for a physical and requested to be tested for any and everything when a week later she received the news she was HIV positive. Immediately after her diagnoses Bridget told her husband who’s reaction was cool, calm, and collect. John went and got tested, and too was told he had HIV and Bridget was the reason why.

Both Bridget and John chose not to disclose their HIV status to their families however, once John became adamant about refusing his medication Bridget made the stand alone decision to come clean. After hearing the news Bridget’s brother Lee advised her to confront her husband and ask him of his sexual history with men. Bridget then found emails and web history of her husband’s second lifestyle. Needless to say the two are no longer a pair. Bridget filed for divorce, sued John and won a whopping $12.5 million settlement. John filed bankruptcy so she never received any of her money.

Today Bridget lives on government assistance, but has found a new happiness with a new love interest along with a baby on the way. While I am very happy for Bridget as I was reading several message boards I found that many women were not. Most women found that Bridget’s decision to conceive the natural way was selfish and inhumane. Many of those who had negative comments to say gave the reasoning that Bridget put the life of another individual at risk by knowingly having the disease and still choosing to have unprotected sex. Some also said she was unfit to raise a child because she had HIV and was living on public assistance. While these reasons shocked me, the most shocking and I must say the most ignorant justification for the scrutinization of Bridget’s character was she willingly would be bringing a HIV positive baby into the world.

Out of ignorance, and I use the term ignorant as a lack of knowledge, people were disgracing this women for her actions and for no apparent reason. The same people in fact if they would have taken the time to do just a little research would have known it is possible to give birth through cesarean section so the unborn child does not contract the virus. Bridget also explained on the show that she was on special medication to protect the health of her unborn child. I found it funny how everyone was quick to jump on Bridget’s case when she and her partner both discussed the risk of having unprotected sex and jointly made the decision to conceive a baby. Being as educated of a woman as Bridget was, I’m sure she and her partner sat with their physician to examine every possible outcome.

I am very interested in hearing your thoughts! Do you think women like Bridget are inhumane monsters for wanting to continue living a normal life, or should infected woman live under a rock and forget about ever starting a family they maybe once dreamed of? Please comment below.

Always be aware that the only thing holding you back from success is you! Want to make a step in the right direction? Expand your knowledge. If you want to make a difference in this world, not matter how small or large, you will first need to know what you’re getting yourself into. No matter what you chose to do to help the global community, you will have to take advice, criticism, and information from others with more experience/expertise for you. So while you’re online reading the hottest online magazine (B.Postive, of course) or tweeting about how boring work is, take some time to educate yourself on whatever it is you need to do in order to uplift, change, or motivate yourself. The city of Birmingham is filled with plenty of FREE opportunities to increase your knowledge of politics, business, personal growth, etc. You can find some of them on the Active Culture website:  http://www.activeculture.info.
